Virtual Try-On: What It Can and Can’t Show You
Virtual try-on generates an image of a garment on a person. Given a photo of you and a photo of a piece of clothing, it produces a preview of the two combined. It has become good enough to be genuinely useful — and it is worth understanding precisely where its usefulness stops.
What it is actually doing
A try-on model works from two inputs: a reference of the person, and an image of the garment. It identifies the body's pose and proportions, then generates a new image with the garment rendered onto that body, attempting to preserve the garment's colour, pattern and rough drape.
The critical word is generating. The model is not measuring the garment against your body — it is producing a plausible image. Plausible is not the same as accurate, and that distinction explains every limitation below.
What it does well
- Proportion and silhouette. Whether a hemline lands well on you, whether a jacket length works with your build — these come through reliably.
- Colour against your colouring. How a shade reads next to your skin and hair is one of the hardest things to judge from a flat product photo, and try-on handles it reasonably.
- Outfit combinations. Seeing several pieces together as a complete look, which is much harder to imagine from a grid of individual items.
- Narrowing choices. Ruling out three of five options before you try anything on for real.
What it cannot tell you
Fit. The model has no measurements. It does not know your bust, your inseam or the garment's actual cut, so a preview showing something fitting perfectly is not evidence that it will. This is the single most important limitation.
Fabric behaviour. Weight, stretch, stiffness and how a fabric moves are generated approximations. A structured cotton and a fluid viscose in the same shape may render almost identically and behave completely differently on.
Exact colour. Output colour depends on the input photo, which depends on the lighting it was shot in. Anything subtle — the difference between navy and black, cream and white — should not be trusted from a preview.
Detail accuracy. Small print scale, button placement, seam lines and hardware are frequently approximated. Fine patterns are the most common casualty.
Comfort. No image can tell you whether a waistband digs in or a collar irritates, and those are the reasons most disliked clothes go unworn.
Use previews to narrow, not to decide. They answer "would this suit me?" much better than "will this fit?"
Getting better results
Output quality depends mostly on the input photo of you:
- Full body, standing straight, facing the camera, arms slightly away from your sides
- Even lighting — indirect daylight, no strong shadows, no backlighting
- Fitted clothing in the reference so your actual proportions are visible; loose layers obscure the shape the model works from
- Plain background and nothing in your hands
- Extra angles if the tool accepts them — a side or three-quarter view improves consistency considerably
The same principles that produce clean garment photos apply to the garment side: plain background, even light, one item, shot flat.
Where it fits in a wardrobe workflow
The most practical use is not shopping — it is planning outfits from clothes you already own. Seeing four pieces from your own closet assembled on you resolves the "will these actually work together?" question that grids and flat-lays leave open, and there is no fit risk at all because you own everything already.
For shopping, treat a preview as one input among several: the preview for suit-and-silhouette, the size guide and your own measurements for fit, reviews for fabric behaviour, and the returns policy for everything the first three miss.
A note on your photos
Try-on requires a photo of you, which is personal data by any reasonable definition. Worth knowing before you upload: whether the images are stored or processed and discarded, whether they are used to train models, whether you can delete them, and who the processing provider is.
Any tool handling body photos should answer those questions plainly in its privacy policy. If it does not, that is an answer of its own.
